Swimming is a human right

The Swimmable Cities movement originated in Europe as an international initiative to restore, clean up, and transform urban waterways into safe places for swimming and recreation. The movement began in Copenhagen and Berlin, where polluted rivers and ports have been successfully transformed into vibrant public spaces where citizens can swim and connect with nature. The movement strengthens the connection between people and their local waterways, enhancing both physical and mental well-being.

Matt Sykes, founder of Regeneration Projects, states, “Unlike many global sustainable development initiatives, our measure of cleanliness is simply the swimmability of the water. This makes the project accessible.”

The movement has already achieved significant results worldwide. In Paris, the transformation of the Seine River has made swimming events once again part of urban life; in New York, the movement has inspired the construction of floating pools on the Hudson River. The Swimmable Cities project has also promoted ecological restoration, such as the revitalization of the Thames River in London, turning urban waterways into dynamic centers of community’s life and supporting the local economy.

Bluet Creates Swimmable Urban Environments

For Bluet, this partnership offers an opportunity to communicate Finnish responsible innovation expertise internationally. It is only natural for a Finnish company to be a pioneer in developing sustainable urban solutions, given our deep connection to nature and water. Bluet’s participation not only strengthens Finland’s role in global environmental efforts but also inspires cities around the world to adopt more sustainable approaches to urban development. The potential of natural water pools is significant globally, as they allow cities and municipalities to offer safe year-round swimming opportunities, not forgetting winter swimming and the challenging summer times during algae seasons.

“Being part of the Swimmable Cities community marks a new chapter in our mission to provide sustainable floating solutions. With our expertise in floating construction, we actively support the movement’s goal of creating more accessible and safe swimming opportunities, through our natural water pools for example,” says Tytti Sirola, CEO and founder of Bluet.

Join the Movement!

Bluet encourages cities and municipalities to join the movement, as they can act as pioneers for the accessibility and swimmability of waterways. This means not just restoring the environment but also improving the quality of life for residents and visitors alike. Together, we can build a future where urban waterways are swimmable and enhance the quality of life in communities!

Matt Sykes urges action: “This unique concept engages people because it clearly and impactfully connects the health benefits of water with social advantages that touch their everyday lives. I encourage everyone to get involved!”
